Daily Care Tips for Dentures

Dentures last longer and fit better with daily care. Whether you are a first-time denture wearer or replacing an existing pair, it is essential to clean, rinse, and store dentures daily. Learn how to extend the life of dentures and avoid the risk of annual replacement.

Brush Dentures Daily
Soaking is no substitute for brushing. Dentures are at risk for plaque buildup just the same as natural teeth. This is why brushing is so essential. Brush dentures the same way as teeth, but with gentle care, using a denture toothbrush. When brushing dentures, always use a denture-safe toothpaste. Traditional toothpaste can damage dentures. Follow swishing water to rinse the denture surface.

Rinse and Soak
Rinse dentures with water after each meal to remove food debris that could build plaque bacteria. To prevent drying or cracking, while retaining a comfortable fit, store dentures to soak in either cool water or a denture solution. Handle with care. Soaking in hot water can increase the risk of warping. Contact your dentist to discuss the best denture cleaners for soaking based on your denture type. Some denture cleaning solutions can tarnish dentures with metal attachments.

Give Dentures A Rest
Removing dentures each evening before bed is just as important as brushing twice daily. Removing dentures before sleep is part of a good dental hygiene routine. It allows gum tissue to rest and prevents plaque bacteria from building on denture surfaces.

Regular dental checkups are an important step to maintaining the life of dentures. Visit your dentist every six months for a dental check of the condition and fit of your dentures. During your visit, your dentist will also check for any signs of gum irritation or gum disease in need of immediate treatment.
