Sedation Dentistry: What to Expect

Sedation dentistry, otherwise known as uses medication to help patients relax when they visit the dentist. At Three Rivers Dental, our extensive experience in sedation dentistry helps you relax before, during, and after your procedure.

Before your appointment, be sure to inform your dentist of your complete health history, because it can affect before and after care plans, especially for diabetics and smokers.

Avoid eating and drinking for six hours prior to the appointment unless your dentist tells you otherwise. You might receive a prescription for a sedative to take the night before you come in to help you sleep well and wake up relaxed, so you’ll arrive at the appointment feeling good. Bring a friend to escort you to and from your appointment to give the sleep medication time to wear off.

Most patients are awake or partially conscious during sedation dentistry procedures. When you arrive, we will guide you through all of your options before you decide which you prefer.

When oral sedation or nitrous oxide is used, you will be awake but relaxed throughout your visit, so the sound of drills and the smell of dental cleaning products won’t bother you.

Regardless of which kind of anesthesia is used, you will be relaxed and pain-free during and after your trip to the dentist. Call us today to schedule your appointment!
